Darius
Smith
was born in Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland. Darius went to
sea in 1895 and spent the rest of his life on the sea in one capacity
or another. In 1912 Darius, his wife Rebecca and son George settled
in West Vancouver. Darius worked as a mate and then as a captain
on the West Vancouver Ferries from 1912 until the ferry service
was discontinued in 1946, excepting during World War 1 when he was
called up as a member of the Royal Navy Reserve. Darius Smith, skipper
of the West Vancouver Ferry No.5, earned local fame when the No.
5 was rammed and sunk by the CPR vessel Princess Alice on February
4, 1935. |
