The West Vancouver Museum stresses hands-on, interactive learning!
This year we are introducing all-new opportunities for elementary and
high school students to discover and explore.
In-House Programs:
Fine Place to Live: The Early Days of West Vancouver
Grade 2-3
West Vancouver Pioneer John Lawson will visit your class and personally
guide your students through an exciting hands-on program of what life
was like in our town before electricity and the automobile.
Sea Walk Tours
Grade 4-10
Discover the unique human and natural history of West Vancouver's waterfront.
Highlights of this fun interactive walking tour include plaque rubbings,
a look at Greater Vancouver's oldest lived-in home and a hands on study
of the first Narrows treacherous tides and currents.
Outreach Programs:
The Lighthouse
Grade: 4 -10
The fascinating story of Point Atkinson Lighthouse, BC's most recognizable
lighthouse. Includes incredible stories of human survival, the development
of the port of Vancouver and the effects of the Second World War. The
former Capilano lighthouse will also be discussed.
Our Flag. Our Story
Grade: 4-10
Your students will probe into the artistic and political development
of our national provincial and municipal flags and symbols in this fun
creative program. Activities include copying and reproducing flags and
crests based on items from the museum collection along with designing
their own coat of arms.
The Walled City
Grade 4-10
West Vancouver's very own Barkerville -Your class will uncover the forgotten
walled City- a look at the Great Northern Fish Cannery which employed
and housed many Japanese, Chinese, First Nation and European families
behind its walls for close to 70 years.
Planning a Community
Grade 4-10
A grass roots way to introduce your class to the local history of town
planning and architecture. Program includes hands on reading of historic
maps, plans and historic real estate and construction ads.
Steam Donkeys and Shingle Bolts
Grade 4-5
Archival photos, 3-D models and actual artifacts, all help piece together
the story of the early days of logging in the forests of West Vancouver.
Tree fallers, logging railways, shingle flumes and forest fires will be
some of the topics discussed.
North Shore Moves: Transportation and You
Grade 5-7
Includes 3 classroom visits. Transportation on Vancouver's North Shore
is a story that goes back thousands of years to the canoes of the Squamish
people, and continues through sailing ships, horses, steamships, trains,
automobiles, bicycles and public transit.
Details:
Programs are available through Mon through Fri. Each program last 60
minutes or 75 minutes, depending on group.
Times: 9:00am, 10:45am, and 1:00pm
Each program is $40.00. Included with your program is a program package
with support material and Work sheets. Please ask for a customized program
to fit your current social studies instructions if you would like to explore
a topic other than those listed.
For classes participating in our in house museum programs, parking is
available on 17th street and Esquimalt Street next to the Museum. Lunch
facilities are available at the museum and John Lawson Park is close by.
